Man standing looking out to sea

Jake's Flow: Choices

Firstly, I’d like to mention that 3 weeks into ‘SHORTS’, I’ve changed the name to ‘Jake’s Flow’ - after all, it’s identical to the archived email series ‘Jake’s Friday Flow’, just not necessarily on a Friday. The beauty (and perhaps the curse) of running SWF independently and rather casually is that I can change things up like this whenever I want. Some would say it means I fall prey to being indecisive and fickle. Any business experts out there care to share their opinion?

Choices

And now we’ve got that detail out of the way let’s get into it.

I’ve had a month or so where I’ve dedicated most of my extra time solely to work - opening some doors and closing others. Some of you may know that I run a small design agency as well as SWF which ultimately pays the bills. I’ve decided to retire and focus on SWF full time as of the end of 2021.

Consequently, I’ve been moving less than usual - specifically I’ve been out in the water surfing very little, one of the things I love the most. Even if you are lucky enough to live by the sea, surfing is a time consuming activity.

Sometimes you have to narrow your focus in order to achieve your goals - and it’s inevitable that other facets of life have to take a back seat. And that’s totally ok.

On Saturday morning I woke early, brewed a coffee and I was in the water by 5.45am in time to see the sunrise.

Life is built on choices. I had the choice to stay in bed, work, read, watch TV... But what I wanted to do was to surf - so I made the choice to make that happen, whatever time I had to get up to do so.

You are responsible for the choices you make - so choose those that make you happy, are useful to you or fulfil you. And that’s not to say you have to get up and go all the time - it’s to be aware that every choice you make will take you in a certain direction. Is that direction where you want to go?

If you live by this, you’ll find regret and guilt are things you will rarely have to face.
